New Storage System

The new storage system we mentioned in the last post is now in place and all images have been synced.

Everything seems to be working now but we'll also be doing some fine-tuning over the next few days to get the best performance out of the new hardware.

Let us know here if you have any problems with images now.

Fixing Fotopages

Fotopages has had a few problems recently.. first the main file server suffered a hardware failure with the power units despite having 6 psu's which were supposed to provide redundancy!

After fixing that we started having problems with the master database server which were compounded by a massive amount of spider activity (I'm looking at you microsoft!), the result of which was a machine that was maxed out no matter what tweaks we did or what dodgy looking spiders we blocked.

So we've replaced the db machine with something much stronger and we moved all the data there yesterday.. so far its looking good with cpu loads a fraction of what they were and pages seem to be loading fast.

The file server which failed before and was repaired, will also soon be retired from active duty as we have a fancy new and much stronger system to replace it. So in the next few days we'll start migrating all the images which will probably take quite a while since there are gazillions of files to move! The migration will happen in the background so you likely wont notice it happening anyway until the end when we briefly disable uploads for the final switch over to the new system.

Other hardware has also been upgraded recently and new servers are going online. So slowly but surely things are improving!
